Flashback Friday

Mark has always been very mechanical, and he enjoys tearing things apart in order to rebuild them.  He analyzes every machine and contraption he sees to find out how it works.  Because of these qualities, it is no surprise that Mark spends so much time and effort working on various projects.  This week we have a few pictures of Mark teaching his little helpers how to get their hands dirty.

Here, Mark is showing his daughter, Casey, how to use common hand tools.

The Racing Experience

On Saturday, July 23rd, bo-mar invited ten employees, friends, and customers to Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis for a fun day of racing! While at the oval track, each person had the opportunity to drive (solo) twelve laps in a NASCAR-style race car.  In addition, everyone rode three laps with a professional race car driver! This was a nice way for Bob and Mark to say thanks to some of their trusted employees and customers.  Here is a video from the day:

Flashback Friday

Welcome to Flashback Friday!  Each Friday, we will be adding photographs of the company and its employees from throughout the years. We wanted take the opportunity to share some bo-mar history, while keeping the blog enjoyable for viewers.  Be sure to follow our blog and see what each Friday will hold!

Unfortunately, we have not been able to find pictures of bo-mar in its original building (1991-1995).  However, here is a 1985 photo of the pole barn Bob and Mark eventually used for bo-mar.  Their dad, Bob Sr., built the barn in 1969 as a place to store and work on cars.  Since bo-mar moved out of the building in 1995, the barn has been reverted back to a space for vintage cars and car parts.

Here are a couple pictures of machinery used at bo-mar back in the 1990s.  While this picture is also from the mid-1980s, bo-mar still operates these machines today.

Here is one of the only early bo-mar pictures in existence.  In 1993/1994, Mark’s Doberman Pinscher, Nitro, became the business’ shop dog.  In this photo, Nitro is sitting on an office chair in the barn.

Community Involvement

bo-mar designed, fabricated, and donated the Mobile Combat Training Door for the Beech Grove SWAT Team in Beech Grove, Indiana. The door frame structure is fabricated out of 14 gauge steel. The door itself and the battering plate consist of ¼ inch, grade 80 steel. This material allows the frame and structure of the door to be abused repeatedly. Below are videos of the door being used in training.  Also included is a link to the testimonial from Chief of Police, Rich Witmer.  For more examples of projects we have fabricated, check out our GALLERIES page.

bo-mar through the years

From bringing design concepts to life with our prototyping services, to fabricating custom metal products, our team will provide exceptional assistance. Our mission is to present customers with a team of engineers and craftsmen designing truly innovative solutions to PLUS OR MINUS ZERO.

bo-mar was established in December of 1991 when owners Bob and Mark Buchanan began work in a 1,000 square foot section of their father’s pole barn. Both Bob and Mark had worked in engineering and manufacturing before they decided to forego employment with Amtrak in order to make their dreams of owning a metal fabrication shop come true. The brothers had built up a working machine shop over some twenty years of restoring and racing automobiles.

In 1995, after four years of working in “the barn,” the brothers ventured out and rented a 6,000 square foot building. That year they also purchased their first laser cutter, press brake, and shear. Their 6,000 square feet soon turned into 12,000 square feet, and eventually bo-mar utilized 18,000 square feet. Still growing, bo-mar purchased its own 38,000 square foot building in 2000. A decade later, bo-mar consists of more than 40 skilled employees and a variety of machines and equipment. Our experienced team is dedicated to delivering the highest quality services and products.
